Optimizing profitability at Tenería San Marcos through traceability tools

The leather industry faces a growing demand for transparency and sustainability throughout its supply chain. Traceability through QR codes has emerged as a key tool for meeting these expectations while improving profitability. This study evaluates the economic feasibility of implementing a traceability system at Tenería San Marcos by analyzing its potential benefits. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including an interview with the manager to explore perceptions regarding the usefulness of traceability and a survey administered to the tannery’s 12 employees to assess their knowledge of the subject. Both instruments were qualitatively validated by experts with recognized academic expertise. Financial and production records were also reviewed to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the process. The research follows a descriptive-explanatory approach, as it examines current processes, identifies the causes of operational problems, and justifies the incorporation of traceability tools to improve efficiency and competitiveness. A non-experimental, cross-sectional design was used, with data collected at a single point in time and participants selected through convenience sampling. As part of the analysis of factors affecting the profitability of the traceability system, an Ishikawa diagram was developed to synthesize potential causes and facilitate the identification of areas for improvement. The results led to the proposal of a four-level architecture for collecting, processing, and communicating information throughout the leather production process. In addition, a cost-benefit model is presented that demonstrates the feasibility of implementation, while contributing to greater consumer confidence and promoting environmentally friendly products.
