Education for Sustainable Development in the Continuing Professional Development of Primary School Teachers: Reference Points for a Proposal
Keywords:
Education for Sustainable Development, Continuing education, primary school teacher, teaching skillsAbstract
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has become an essential component of contemporary educational systems, as it promotes the development of citizens capable of acting responsibly in response to the social, economic, and environmental challenges of today's world. Achieving these goals requires that teachers, particularly at the primary education level, receive continuous professional development that enables them to integrate sustainability principles into their pedagogical practice. In this context, the aim of this study was to identify the theoretical and methodological aspects that should be considered in the continuing professional development of primary school teachers for ESD. To this end, a qualitative study was conducted based on the systematization and critical analysis of scientific literature published between 2015 and 2025 in various academic databases and scholarly networks. The findings made it possible to identify key trends, approaches, and foundations underpinning teacher education for ESD, while also highlighting the need to promote contextualized, comprehensive, and practice-oriented professional development processes. It is concluded that continuous teacher education is a fundamental condition for strengthening the integration of sustainability into educational processes and for contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
