Photorefractive keratectomy as an alternative for the correction of refractive errors: a case report

Abstract

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is an option for correcting refractive errors in patients who are not candidates for corneal flap procedures. A descriptive, observational study was conducted to evaluated preoperative examination findings, as well as topographic changes and visual acuity three months after surgery in a patient seen at the Optometry Clinic of Metropolitan University during the first quarter of 2026. The fundamentals of the technique, selection criteria and its effects on visual quality and patient well- being analyzed. Preoperative variables such as visual acuity, manifest refraction, corneal topography and pachymetry were considered in addition to postoperative clinical follow-up. The results showed a significant improvement in uncorrected vision, adequate epithelial regeneration, and sustained refractive stability. PRK proved to be a safe, effective, and predictable procedure, especially useful in patients with specific corneal characteristics who were not candidates for other techniques.
