Abstract

This study evaluated the in vitro insecticidal effect of leaf powders from Syzygium malaccense (L.) and Syzygium cumini (L.) against the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae L., in stored maize (Zea mays L.) grains. A completely randomized design was used with concentrations of 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3% (w/w) of each plant powder, along with an untreated control, and insect mortality was assessed after 7, 14, and 21 days. The results demonstrated insecticidal activity for both plant species, with S. cumini at 0.1% and S. malaccense at 0.2% producing the highest mortality rates. These findings indicate that plant leaf powders, particularly S. cumini at 0.1%, represent a promising eco-friendly alternative for the postharvest management of S. oryzae in stored maize.
