The Role of Grandparents in the Education of Children, Adolescents, and Young People: Myths and Realities

This article analyzes the role of grandparents in the education of children, adolescents, and young people, with the aim of identifying their educational implications in a group of university students. Through a qualitative approach, based on the systematization of experiences and the analysis of 54 students from the Pedagogy-Psychology program, perceptions, functions, and learning associated with the grandparent figure were identified. The results confirm that grandparents constitute an affective, ethical, and formative pillar, especially in childhood and adolescence, standing out for their patience, resilience, and transmission of their acquired knowledge and values. Although myths persist about their permissiveness and flexibility in their educational attitudes, their contribution is significant in the ethical, civic, and work dimensions. It is concluded that the educational influence of grandparents is multidimensional and relevant in the psychological development of their grandchildren, requiring future studies on intergenerational interactions.
