Emergency psychological care: first aid and emotional stabilization

Emergency psychological care is a fundamental component of comprehensive response efforts in critical situations that generate emotional, cognitive, and behavioral disturbances in affected individuals. The aim of this article was to analyze the theoretical and practical foundations of psychological first aid and emotional stabilization as immediate intervention strategies in crisis and emergency contexts. To achieve this, a qualitative documentary study was conducted based on the review and critical analysis of specialized scientific literature published between 1999 and 2026. The search included scientific articles, systematic reviews, clinical trials, doctoral dissertations, institutional reports, and academic documents related to emergency psychology, crisis intervention, and mental health. The findings indicate that psychological first aid is a flexible and adaptable intervention that enhances the perception of safety, strengthens coping resources, and facilitates the initial emotional recovery of individuals exposed to potentially traumatic events. Likewise, emotional stabilization emerges as an essential component for reducing the intensity of acute psychological reactions and promoting more adaptive adjustment processes. The review also highlights the importance of resilience, social support, professional training, and specialized crisis care models as factors that contribute to optimizing recovery outcomes. However, challenges remain regarding the need to strengthen empirical evidence, expand longitudinal research, and develop studies in diverse cultural contexts. It is concluded that emergency psychological care is an indispensable tool for protecting mental health and strengthening response capacity in critical situations and traumatic events.
