Towards a new legal paradigm: incorporating multispecies relationships into the Ecuadorian legal framework.

The ongoing transformation of the family concept has challenged traditional notions of kinship, introducing new forms of coexistence where companion animals play a central emotional and functional role. In Ecuador, this phenomenon fuels the debate on the need to legally recognize multispecies bonds, moving beyond the utilitarian view that reduces animals to mere property. Normative inclusion of such relationships implies not only an expansion of the family concept but also a structural shift in how the law safeguards interspecies affective ties. Legal recognition would ensure basic rights such as welfare, protection from abuse, and consideration of animals in matters like custody, inheritance, or eviction. Moving toward this new paradigm requires aligning constitutional principles with a legal ethics that acknowledges the significance of the human-animal bond in contemporary society.
