Analysis of food and nutritional security in the community of Santa Isabel Mixtitlán, Tlaxcala

Food security is defined as the physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food at all times to meet food needs and preferences for an active and healthy life. Otherwise, food insecurity and, in turn, malnutrition occur in one or two forms: undernutrition, overweight, and obesity. Households with children aged 6–14 years, students at the Benito Juárez primary school belonging to the National Council for Educational Development, were selected. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, as well as the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale (LACFS), along with anthropometric measurements of weight and height. Eighteen percent of households were food secure, and 82% experienced some level of food insecurity (FI). Furthermore, 21% of schoolchildren were overweight and 21% were at risk of becoming overweight, 29% were obese, and 29% had short stature/age, i.e., stunted growth. The prevalence of FI and mild food insecurity was high in the households studied. The geographic, economic, and infrastructure conditions, as well as the limited reach of social programs in this community, could explain why the management of social food interventions and food education is crucial.
