The understanding of science is a process influenced by sociocultural factors that shape the way individuals receive and interpret scientific knowledge. The objective of this study is to analyze how cultural and social variables—such as language, cultural norms, prevailing beliefs, socioeconomic context, and traditional knowledge—influence the understanding of scientific knowledge among undergraduate students at the University of the Gulf of California during the 2026 academic year. A mixed-methods research approach with a descriptive-explanatory design was employed, utilizing a literature review and content analysis to establish the theoretical framework. A questionnaire was administered via Google Forms to 123 students from seven undergraduate programs in May 2026 to ascertain their perspectives regarding two basic dimensions: their perception of science and the cultural and educational influences on their understanding of subjects related to their field of study. The results show that students interpret scientific knowledge based on prior cultural frameworks, which can either facilitate or hinder their learning. Furthermore, they recognize that access to information and teachers’ pedagogical training are key factors that influence the analysis, processing, and communication of scientific information. They conclude that science education must consider cultural diversity as a key element in improving teaching and learning processes and in fostering active participation and motivation to promote the social appropriation of scientific knowledge.
