Educational innovation: application of artificial intelligence in the teaching of logistics and transport

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into higher education represents a structural transformation of the twenty-first-century pedagogical paradigm, with direct implications for Logistics and Transportation programs. This article presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) examining the current state of scientific knowledge regarding the application of artificial intelligence tools in university-level Logistics and Transportation education within the Latin American and Ecuadorian contexts during the period 2018–2026. The PRISMA 2020 protocol (Page et al., 2021) was adopted to guide the search and selection of studies across the Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, Redalyc, and Dialnet databases. Following the screening process, 14 primary studies were included in the final synthesis. The findings identify four major dimensions of AI application: (1) intelligent tutoring systems and adaptive learning approaches focused on logistics competencies; (2) simulation tools and virtual environments for decision-making in Logistics and Transportation; (3) learning analytics for the continuous assessment of competencies; and (4) pedagogical assistants based on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and gamification. The evidence indicates improvements ranging from 20% to 30% in academic performance, a 40% reduction in instructors’ assessment workload, and increased student motivation. Nevertheless, critical challenges remain regarding technological infrastructure, faculty training, and institutional ethical frameworks. The study concludes by proposing an empirical research agenda for the Ecuadorian context and introducing the Pedagogical Framework for AI Integration in Logistics and Transportation.
