Diagnostic study on disaster risks in the Potrerillo community, Sancti Spíritus province.

In the rural community of Potrerillo, in the municipality of Cabaiguán, a comprehensive assessment was conducted to characterize the environmental situation leading to disaster risks in Potrerillo, Sancti Spíritus province. This process included dynamic workshops with the participation of social actors, community leaders, representatives of organizations, members of the municipality's local development group, government officials, and residents. The assessment consisted of three stages that culminated in an algorithm designed to improve not only the quality of life for citizens but also to help the community comply with environmental regulations, fostering more responsible and resilient development. Furthermore, scientific methods such as observation and interviews were employed to identify and analyze the community's strengths and weaknesses related to its capacity to respond to extreme hydrometeorological events. As a result, a participatory diagnosis was obtained that revealed the shortcomings and potential in disaster risk reduction management, which favors future actions to increase adaptive response capacity to events related to climate change and to the fulfillment in Cuba of the sustainable development goals proposed by the United Nations, thereby increasing the resilience of the community in vulnerable conditions, reinforcing education and training in the areas of prevention and management for disaster risk reduction.
